Upgrade of Victim Support Unit
Danielle Dooley

Douglasdale police station is proud to boast a new improved Victim Support Unit thanks to Sasfin Bank and various sponsors. The hand over of the unit took place on July 10, 2009 the event also celebrated the stations 10th birthday.

Annually Sasfin Bank Limited participates in some form of charity or community work. They made it open to members of their department to come up with suggestions for their 2009 project and the Victim Support Unit received 99% of the votes. They met with Director Naidoo, Station Commissioner of Douglasdale police station to strategise the work that needed to be done.

Given that this was a community project, they wished to involve their Business Colleagues and local businesses in the Fourways area. They also received numerous personal donations and assistance from the general public.

On the day of the handover Jacques Coetzee of Sasfin Bank said his mind wandered back to the first day of the project and thought of the days that had passed over the last month and wondered what the end result would be. “Everything came together and everything was a success,” said Jacques.

At the start of the project Jacques said he had a look at the work that the Police did, and then it all made sense…. pick up a weapon and fight. His weapon of choice was a pick and spade. “As in life we fight for survival, we fight for success, we fight for business transactions, better prices and we fight crime,” said Jacques.

“We started to get things going and then the thundering support followed…
Richard Frolich from Astor Berning donated topsoil, Liezel and Andrew were swinging the pick and shovel, children were helping us on youth day. Then Lance from Evergreen Turf donated 300m2 of grass for the garden area, we received personal donations of plants and toys and all sorts of things that would make this a success.
“Mike from Rustic Timber jumped on board as the garden grew; additional grass was received from the grass factory. Then out of the blue, I had a call from Nial from LandscapeD who insisted he install the irrigation system.
“We had Tokkie Joubert from Alderkabel spending his evenings building the wheel chair access for us, donated by Guerra Steel. Sharp Steel assisted with additional steel.
“Without hesitation, Dawie Olivierand his team at Sasfin, donated the 2 PC’s. From day one, Richard Wainright from Nashua East Rand was very excited to deliver a copier for the Unit. Paul Gray at Nec, without even asking a question, assisted with an additional donation of a copier, to be used in the CSC. AMC donated two office chairs for Beauty and Baloy and YN Designs and Upholstery re-upholstered the couch for us and made the mattresses for the beds. Tobie from Executive Stones come on board with the granite with just two days to go and without hesitation Colin from Impresso plumbing assisted with all our plumbing requirements.

“Through all this, in just one month, we have reached our goal, and Douglasdale police station has a new and improved Victim support Unit, a place that we are proud of. We have achieved what we set out to do - to give the station the support unit they deserve in order to assist people in need of help,” said Jacques.
