Sasfin began as an importer of textiles and has developed a particular understanding of the challenges of foreign trade. During the height of Apartheid and sanctions, the national government made life very difficult for importers in a drive to protect local industry. At this point Sasfin recognised the need for companies to finance their foreign trade.

Over time this offering developed through the acquisition of Premier Freight, the obtaining of a foreign exchange licence and the establishment of Sasfin Asia in Hong Kong. All of these decisions were taken in order for Sasfin to be able to offer a comprehensive foreign trade solution.
