Sasfin supports the annual Sunflower Fund cycle from Johannesburg to Cape Town in support of Cancer patients that require stem cell donations.

Sasfin annually supports and sponsors the cyclists who take part in The Sunflower Fund cycle tour- Tour of Light. On Friday, 26 February, a group of 10 cyclists will cycle a gruelling 1500km’s over eight days from Johannesburg to Cape Town to raise awareness on Leukaemia and the shortage of stem cell donors in South Africa .

The Sunflower Fund educates and recruits potential stem cell donors to join the registry. The Sunflower Fund raises funds to pay for the tissue type testing costs that place donors onto the South African Bone Marrow Registry through events such as the Tour of Light and various fundraisers and sponsorships. The organisations aim is to build a registry with viable donors that are representative of all ethnic groups in South Africa.

There is a 1 in 100 000 chance of patients finding a match. A donor will only be a match to a patient within their same ethnic group because the matches are based on DNA. 75% of patients suffering from leukaemia are under the age of 25.

The cycle tour starts at the Grasmere toll plaza and ends in Cape Town on Friday, 4 March. The cyclists will be stopping to rest in Kroonstaad, Bloemfontein, Colesberg, Richmond, Beaufort West, Matjesfontein and Paarl before they arrive in Cape Town.

Be on the look out and give your support to these brave men and women passing through your town. All funds raised will be directed to The Sunflower Fund to educate, recruit and pay for the test costs for potential stem cell donors to join the South African Bone Marrow Registry.
